《四库全书》全称《钦定四库全书》，是清代乾隆时期编修的大型丛书。在清高宗乾隆帝的主持下，由纪昀等360多位高官、学者编撰，3800多人抄写，耗时十三年编成。分经、史、子、集四部，故名“四库”。据文津阁藏本，共收录3462种图书，共计79338卷（相当于《永乐大典》的3.5倍 ），36000余册，约八亿字 。
乾隆四十七年（1782年）初稿完成，乾隆五十七年（1792年）全部完成。 乾隆帝命人手抄了7部《四库全书》，下令分别藏于全国各地。先抄好的四部分贮于紫禁城文渊阁、辽宁沈阳文溯阁、圆明园文源阁、河北承德文津阁珍藏，这就是所谓的“北四阁”。后抄好的三部分贮扬州文汇阁、镇江文宗阁和杭州文澜阁珍藏，这就是所谓的“南三阁”。
《四库全书》是中国古代最大的文化工程，对中国古典文化进行了一次最系统、最全面的总结，呈现出了中国古典文化的知识体系。 《四库全书》可以称为中华传统文化最丰富最完备的集成之作。中国文、史、哲、理、工、农、医，几乎所有的学科都能够从中找到源头和血脉。
